ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Augustine Chavez and Michael Vallejos remain in jail following their arraignment last week before Judge Camille Martinez Olguin on charges of second-degree murder in the beating and death of John Rains, 25, of Bluewater on Jan. 15, the Cibola Beacon reported.
Chavez and Vallejos, who were arrested two weeks ago, are being held on $750,000 cash or surety bonds, the Beacon said.
A third person, Natalie Mock, was arrested but released on bond after a day in jail on suspicion of misdemeanor aggravated battery for allegedly tasing Rains as he was being kicked, the paper reported.
Police said an intoxicated Rains returned to a house on Davis Street in Grants in the early morning of Jan. 15 after he had been there earlier, the Beacon said.
Some witnesses told police that Rains had slipped on ice and fell and hit his head, while others claimed he was hit by someone and fell, according to the paper.
Chavez and Vallejos are accused of beating Rains while he lay on the ground until he became unconscious, and Rains was barely breathing when police arrived at the scene around 2 a.m., the Beacon reported.
