HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The UNM men’s soccer team faces fifth-ranked and No. 1 seed Charlotte today in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament being held at Marshall University.
The fifth-seeded Lobos (10-6-2) advanced with a win on penalty kicks over No. 19 Kentucky on Wednesday. New Mexico, 40th in the NCAA’s Ratings Percentage Index, is hoping its work in the C-USA event will earn it a spot in the 48-team NCAA Tournament.
Charlotte (12-2-2) defeated New Mexico 2-1 last month in North Carolina. The 49ers scored both their goals on penalty kicks in the first half by senior Brandt Bronico, the C-USA player of the year. Senior Niko Hansen delivered UNM’s goal on an assist from freshman Devin Boyce.
The winner of today’s 2:30 p.m. match advances to the tournament final Sunday at noon.
No. 3 seed Florida International faces seventh-seed Old Dominion in today’s other semifinal.
