FARMINGTON – The Navajo Nation Council will meet in a special session on Thursday to consider a bill to amend the tribe’s fiscal year 2017 comprehensive budget.
The bill proposes to restore approximately $8.3 million in funding that was line-item vetoed by Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye.
On Sept. 8, the council approved the fiscal year budget then submitted the budget for review by the president, who used his line-item veto authority to eliminate funding to a number of departments and programs.
Among the programs whose funding could be restored is the Navajo Area Agency on Aging, which would receive approximately $1.4 million for its central administration and five agency offices.
The bill language also proposes restoring approximately $1 million to Navajo Nation chapters, $847,707 for District Grazing officials under the Division of Natural Resources and $752,401 for the Judicial Branch.
The special session will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the council chamber in Window Rock, Ariz.
