Three days before the start of their prep basketball season, the Santa Fe High School girls had a new coach.
Veteran coach Lanse Carter has been named the Demonettes head coach, taking over for Rick Apodaca after one season, said Santa Fe Public Schools spokesman Jeff Gephart, who declined to discuss the details of Apodaca’s sudden replacement.
“It is a personnel matter,” he said. “That’s all I can really say.”
Carter, who teaches math at the school and was one of the applicants when Apodaca was hired prior to last season, has also coached at Capital, Pojoaque Valley and Santa Fe Indian School. He won consecutive state championships with Pojoaque in 2008 and 2009 and will coach the team at the least for the rest of the season, Gephart said.
Carter had his first practice with the team Wednesday morning and the Demonettes have their first game Saturday against Santa Fe Indian School.
Apodaca, who also formally coached the Taos boys, had an 8-19 record in his one season at Santa Fe.
