Officer Fred Duran said that, around 2 p.m., people working near the center on Fifth and Mountain NW heard multiple shots fired. They called police and responding officers found the victim lying on his back on the sidewalk leading to the entrance of the community center.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation.

Duran said the center was secured and several children who had been inside at the time of the shooting were picked up by their parents.

“At this point in time, it is believed to be an isolated incident,” Duran said. “No others were injured that police have been made aware of.”

A woman who answered the phone at the community center said no one from the building was involved in the incident, but she wasn’t able to comment further.

The victim had not been positively identified as of Tuesday evening and no one was in custody, Duran said.
