Support locals: Shop Small Saturday

After Rodger McKown retired from a career as a writer and editor in 2007, the former El Paso Times sports writer began RMC Jewelry Creations.

McKown’s homegrown, handmade, wire-wrapped jewelry business is still going strong nearly 10 years later. The retiree will join other artisans and small business owners during the Small Business Saturday Arts and Crafts Show.

The show is today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main lobby of Premiere Cinemas.

The show will feature work and merchandise from local jewelry artists, woodworkers, yarn artists and apron makers. The Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce organized the event.

The arts and crafts show is one piece to the national Small Business Saturday movement.

The day, set aside to encourages shoppers to consider small and local businesses when shopping for the holidays, has been celebrated in Rio Rancho for the past few years – last year’s festivities included an online hashtag and a receipt coupon incentive.

Mayor Gregg Hull said he encourages residents to shop local during this weekend.

“As we think about shopping local this year, never before have we had a greater opportunity to spend our dollars locally this year than we have in the past, with all the new retail opportunities that have come to town,” Hull said. “Obviously, with Shop Small Saturday we want to really get out there and support our local businesses, because it not only supports those businesses so they can be successful, it also helps the city be successful.”

McKown, a member of the city’s arts and crafts guild, said he looked forward to the arts and crafts show, saying he was pleased to see the RRRCC consider local artisans for the holiday shopping event.

“There’s a number of really good artists with different types of jewelry, fine art, woodwork and fabric arts in Rio Rancho, and this provides all of us to get our work out in the public,” he said.
