San Juan College to enact layoffs due to state funding cuts

FARMINGTON, N.M. — San Juan College will lay off 12 employees as part of a major budget cut to account for a loss of state funding.

The Farmington Daily Times reports (http://bit.ly/2hjFAis ) that the College Board on Tuesday approved a mid-year reduction for the current fiscal year budget of more than 1.1 million.

In all, four faculty, three professional, three support and two administrator positions will be eliminated, saving the college $347,000 for the current fiscal year.

The remaining budget cut of about $792,000 will largely come from one-time reduction in the college’s payment into the Retiree Healthcare Insurance Trust.

The cuts come after Gov. Susana Martinez in October signed Senate Bill 9 into law, which cut education funding by 5 percent.
