HealthCare.gov moves sign up deadline to 12:59 AM Tuesday

Consumers will have a few extra days to sign up on HealthCare.gov in time for health insurance coverage to take effect Jan. 1.

The new deadline is 12:59 a.m. Tuesday, extended beyond the previous deadline of Thursday “because of extraordinary demand,” according to the federal government.

The Obama administration has set a goal of signing up 13.8 million people for 2017, a modest increase.

In New Mexico, health insurance is available at beWellnm.

Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify, as well as tax credits that can lower premiums in 2017, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The agency said more than 4 million people have selected plans using HealthCare. gov since open enrollment began Nov. 1, including 23,078 people in New Mexico.

That includes both new consumers and people renewing their coverage on Healthcare.gov.

Consumers can still sign up for 2017 coverage until Jan. 31, although it won’t be available on Jan. 1.

President-elect Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers have vowed to repeal significant portions of the health care law.
