Update: The boy’s body was recovered from the hole Monday morning. Get the full story here.

Police, fire and rescue workers spent Sunday digging in Carlsbad to reach a body they believe belongs to a 4-year-old boy who disappeared Saturday.

The boy, Samuel Jones, was last seen at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Search crews of area residents fanned out around his home all night long, until a police officer found a deep hole on the property of the boy’s neighbor about 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a report in the Carlsbad Current-Argus.

The hole is about 30 feet deep and 14 inches in diameter, according to the newspaper, and when investigators dropped a camera down into the hole, they found what they believe is the boy’s body.

The State Police had issued an Amber Alert for Samuel on Saturday night, saying a boy matching his description had been seen walking with a man in a red shirt, and he was believed to be in danger.

State Police canceled the alert Sunday night.

Using standard procedure until more information is available, the incident is being investigated as a homicide, according to the Carlsbad Current-Argus report.
