9:45am — “Buddy’ Musical Kicks Off Clovis Festival

Buddy HollyALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — International tribute to Lubbock legend will make its Clovis debut tonight.

The story of Buddy Holly’s three-year rise to fame — the musical “Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story” — has played around the world since opening in London in 1989, but will be on stage in Clovis for the first time tonight, kicking off this year’s annual music festival, the Clovis News Journal reported.

Cast with Texas Tech students as well as professional actors, the show has been performed 20 times this summer as part of the Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, the News Journal said.

Holly, who died in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, was a native of Lubbock who recorded at the Norman Petty Studio in Clovis, the paper reported.
