Prep notes: Academy runner Lesansee earns honor

Next month, Jordan Lesansee of Albuquerque Academy will begin the home stretch of his stellar running career.

Before then, the Chargers senior earned some bragging rights.

Earlier this week, Lesansee was chosen as the Gatorade New Mexico Cross Country Runner of the Year for the 2016 season.

Among his highlights last fall was breaking the course record on his home track at the Academy Invitational, and winning the Class 5A state title in November.

He also placed sixth at the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional after the prep season.

He’ll close his career running the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Chargers’ track and field team this spring.

FOOTBALL COACHING UPDATES: Los Lunas High School is scheduled to interview its finalists today, district athletic director Wilson Holland said.

Terrell Trantham resigned earlier this year.

In Clovis, AD Dale Fullerton said the Wildcats’ position will remain advertised until the middle of this month, so it will still be several weeks before a successor to Eric Roanhaus is hired.

Alamogordo coach Dale Hooper resigned on Thursday after four seasons. His son, Kyle, was an outstanding quarterback for the Tigers the last two seasons and earlier this week signed to play for Western New Mexico.

SANCHEZ A FINALIST: La Cueva swimming coach Vince Sanchez is one of the finalists for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association national coach of the year award.

He is one of eight that are up for the award, which will be handed out June 21, 2017 in East Peoria, Ill. The finalists are chosen based on a number of categories, including longevity, championships and winning percentage.

PONY UP: The New Mexico Activities Association is selling tournament passes for next month’s state basketball tournament.

The pass is $135 which includes a reserved seat at the Pit, a program, plus entry into any game at any site being used that week, plus first-round games March 3-4. That includes the Santa Ana Star Center, Bernalillo High, Rio Rancho High and Cleveland High.

The second week of state runs March 7-11.

Selection Sunday for the state brackets is Feb. 26.

Two Manzano High School baseball players also have signed national letters of intent: Erik “Blue” Culp with Doane University in Crete, Neb., and Adam Fasulo with New Mexico Military Institute.
