Journal photos show the late-model yellow Ford Mustang police were chasing westbound on I-40 crashed along the roadside near mile marker 108 between Gallup and Grants.

State Police, Laguna Pueblo tribal police and Cibola County Sheriff’s deputies are on scene, and law enforcement offices appear to be searching an open filed north of the freeway on ATVs.

Police are chasing an armed suspect westbound on Interstate 40, according to APD spokeswoman Tasia Martinez.

APD received several calls reporting that a man had fired shots from his vehicle at a woman’s vehicle near the intersection of Golf Course and Ellison, Martinez said. The man then got onto westbound I-40, where APD officers began chasing him.

APD had authorized spike belts and told officers they could use their vehicles to stop the man, but no safe opportunity presented itself to employ either of those tactics, she said.

The man drove out of city limits, Martinez said, and State Police took over the pursuit.

No one appears to have been injured, she said.
