SANTA FE, N.M. — The state House had a little fun before adjourning Saturday night.

The members agreed to declare an emergency and passed a bill directing the state to create license plates with a logo celebrating New Mexico’s famous red and green chile.

House Bill 393, sponsored Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, won approval on a 58-1 vote.

The proposal was amended to declare an emergency so it can go into effect as soon as it becomes law. It still needs approval by the Senate and Gov. Susana Martinez.

The speed is necessary because Colorado — where the chile is inferior, by all accounts at the Roundhouse — is also racing to create chile license plates.

“We take our chile seriously, and this is an emergency,” said Rep. Nathan Small, D-Las Cruces.

House Speaker Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, added: “Colorado is watching, ladies and gentleman.”
