Softball: UNLV gets even with Lobos

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of New Mexico softball team dropped the second game of the UNLV series, 4-2 to the Rebels. The Lobos are now 15-12 on the year and 1-1 in the Mountain West. UNLV improved to 18-12 and 2-3.

The Lobos’ bats were off to a hot start in the first inning, as they put together two runs off five straight hits. Shelbie Franc led off the game with a single to left field. She advanced to second on Cheyenne Smith‘s single to third.

Franc scored on Jasmine Casados‘ single to center, which also moved up Smith to second. Chelsea Johnson loaded the bases with a single to center. Michala Erickson followed with the third straight single to center, scoring Smith from third.

UNLV responded with two runs in the bottom of the second off a triple and a sacrifice fly to center.  Two more runs came across for the Rebels, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Lobos were kept off balance for the rest of the game as they only put a hit together in the second, third and seventh innings.

Smith led the Lobos at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Casados and Erickson each had an RBI.

Jensen Main took the loss for the Lobos in the circle, dropping to 5-4 on the year. She allowed four runs, three earned, off five hits, while walking two. Krissy Fortner came in relief and pitched 1.2 innings.

The Lobos will look to claim the series in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. The game will air on the Mountain West Network here and live stats will be available here.
