WHILE I AM pleased with Paul Krebs’ choice to hire Paul Weir for the vacant UNM basketball head coach position, I am uncomfortable that we had to poach from NMSU to get the job done.
— Bob, UNM Area
I HAD THE pleasure of attending the introductory press conference of new Lobo men’s basketball coach, Paul Weir. We were all blown away at what a humble, gracious, detail oriented and cerebral guy he is. Among other things, he quoted a Greek philosopher and politely declined to don the ceremonial cherry blazer until he’s “earned the right to do so”. Wow. Powerful stuff. He’s a great hire and will undoubtedly get the men’s basketball program back on track. Let’s support and embrace Coach Weir in his quest to take us back to winning conference championships every year!
— George Scott
ARE YOU kidding me? Krebs hires an inexperienced coach from a sub-par conference who won with someone else’s players. Similar to the coach he just fired and gave an idiotic extension to after he won with someone else’s players. Krebs needs to go!

LOBOS FINALLY got it right. Wanted a big time coach from a big time university with great basketball tradition. Aggies have twice the final four appearances as UNM, 2½times the Sweet 16 appearances and 1½ times total NCAA appearances. Great hire. Just remember you have to be politically correct in your cheer, so from now on it’s “Everyone’s an Aggie, woof, woof, woof”.
— Always an Aggie
IN ORDER FOR Coach Weir to succeed at UNM he needs to bring in student/athletes that are dedicated to the program he wants to build. The guys that were gonna leave should just continue on out the door so the new Lobos can move forward without the deadwood holding them back. They had it made here.
LOBOS: REJOICE! Aggies: Leaven your bitterness with the knowledge that Enormous State University will pay Paul Weir to dump UNM in 3-5 years.
— Larry the VOL
WHY DOESN’T Noodles go to NMSU since he “loves” NM so much, he can stay in state, doesn’t have to go far, can till keep in contact with Coach Alford, he can visit the PIT once a year!
HOW MUCH is the buyout for Paul Krebs if this venture isn’t successful in two years? (Oh, that’s right, his contract is up in two years.)
— Lobo Statistician
WEIR: A dam good choice to stop the outflow of players and change the course from losing to winning.
I LOVE THE line (in Randy Harrison’s Wednesday column) “That’s what happened, Mountain West, when in 2010 you started poaching the WAC. Guess what? You became the WAC.” I’ll bet you were tempted to end that last sentence with an ! instead of a .

SO NOW UNM has resorted to stealing lunch money from our little brother to the South. Low blow, poor form. What’s next? I hear their AD, University President, and Board of Regents are also available.
— Allan, father of an attorney
VERY DISAPPOINTED Paul Weir went to the Lobos. He could’ve gone anywhere but UNM. He said it’s not about money. BS, that’s all it’s about. No loyalty in coaching anymore. NMSU can’t complete with UNM financially, so he stabs them in the back. Feel so bad for the players, hope he loses every game to NMSU!

AS AN AGGIE FAN, it’s been entertaining watching the Krebs circus act of horrible hires/fires. Never thought he would upset the entire state’s chile cart. Keep your ojos open here Mr. Weir. Epectations are unreasonable in the Duke City.

ON THE DOWN SIDE, we hire a coach who has been a head coach for 1 year and used his former coach’s players to achieve success in a bad conference to make himself look good. Sounds too familiar. But at least he can coach effort, or so he says. Everyone still leaving?

SO ABQ JOURNAL, with all the negative press (you) give to WisePies, it’s time we thank Steve Chávez and the WisePies team for all they do for NM! Donating over $10,000 to boys and girls club this weekend. Let’s appreciate our local New Mexicans instead of beating on them.
