They were loosed from barebows, compounds and recurves, and they were loosed by the hundreds.

Between the twang of the bowstring and the thud of the target — countless arrows whizzed through the air at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday.

More than 200 archers in age groups from 13 years old on and from other parts of the country turned out for the first day of the 56th USA Indoor Archery and youth-based JOAD Indoor nationals.

The Duke City is one of more than a dozen stops for the competition. Sunday will see the pool of competitors shrink, and at the tail end of the competition, which wraps up on Feb. 23 in Illinois, the top eight men and eight women from each discipline will go head-to-head in the finals.
