Today at the Roundhouse

Published Modified

We’re officially one-quarter of the way through the 60-day legislative session, and things are moving quickly. Here are hot-topic bills and fun events to watch for on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Roundhouse:

Legislative salaries: A proposed constitutional amendment that could lead to New Mexico legislators receiving a salary is set for its first hearing in the Senate Rules Committee at 9 a.m.

The proposal, Senate Joint Resolution 1, would give voters the say in whether the state should create an independent commission to set pay levels for legislators. New Mexico is currently the only state in which lawmakers are not paid a salary, though they do receive payments intended to cover food and lodging expenses.

Health care worker shortage: A bill aimed at alleviating New Mexico’s health care provider shortage will get its first vetting in the House Health and Human Services Committee at 8:30 a.m.

The bill, House Bill 15, would appropriate $2 million to fund a recruitment program focused on finding people who graduated with a health care-related degree but are not currently working in the health care field.

Stay healthy: It’s officially New Mexico Public Health Day, with booths and displays in the Capitol Rotunda from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. However, the cafeteria will still sell Frito pies, desserts and other semi-healthy snacks.
