Blake's Lotaburger imposes surcharge due to egg shortage
Blake’s Lotaburger
A New Mexican breakfast staple is going to cost an extra buck because eggs are costing a lotamore.
Blake’s Lotaburger announced Wednesday that it will tack on a $1 surcharge to all menu items that contain eggs due to a national egg shortage. The price increase starts Thursday.
The fast-food restaurant said the price increase is temporary. A company spokeswoman couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.
Blake’s breakfast burritos and sandwiches contain eggs. The sandwich has two eggs, according to Blake’s website.
Blake’s is the latest chain affected by a dearth of eggs, which is being caused by an avian flu outbreak gripping poultry farms across the U.S.
The strain is lethal in many kinds of birds, forcing suppliers to destroy flocks of chickens. Several grocery store chains around Albuquerque have raised egg prices or put a cap on the number a customer can buy at a time.
“We are an organization that serves fresh, cracked eggs,” Blake’s said in a news release. “We are committed to maintaining this standard while navigating these challenges, and we believe this is the most responsible approach to continuing to serve our valued guests.”
