A steady stream of customers walked up to the Verizon store on Paseo del Norte during the lunch hour on Monday.

Employees were meeting them outside, asking them in the parking lot if they were inquiring about service problems.

Tens of thousands of Verizon customers lost service throughout the U.S. on Monday. Data from outage tracker DownDetector showed reports topped 100,000 across the country shortly after 9 a.m. That number dropped significantly throughout the day, but by 2 p.m. nearly 48,000 were still facing issues.

“Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has started to be restored,” Ilya Hemlin, a Verizon spokesperson, said in an email on Monday afternoon. “We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this issue.”

The outages affected Verizon customers in Albuquerque.

Karen Ross, a customer, went to the Verizon store because her phone wasn’t working.

“I was on my way home from an errand, and a friend of mine was trying to call, and he texted from Minnesota, and he goes, ‘I’m trying to call you.’” Ross said outside the Verizon store on Monday.

Ross is retired. She said it was difficult because she couldn’t call to check on her 90-year-old mother and other family members.

“It’s frustrating,” she said.

Joe Estrada, another Verizon customer, said there wasn’t much to be done about the situation.

“You could rant and rave and throw a fit,” he said. “But it’s still going to be down.”
