City to host webinar on immigration rights, protections for business owners
The city of Albuquerque is offering a free webinar for business owners on Wednesday about immigrants' rights.
The city of Albuquerque on Wednesday will offer a free, anonymous webinar on immigration rights and protections for business owners.
It comes amid immigration enforcement sweeps around the nation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — a result of President Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations.
The Wednesday webinar, which starts at 2 p.m., will provide information on immigration policies as well as rights of business owners, workers and tenants, best practices for ICE interactions and other resources.
A recording of the webinar will be available online as well at www.cabq.gov/office-of-equity-inclusion.
Mayor Tim Keller has been vocal about Albuquerque being an “immigrant-friendly” city. City employees, including police, aren’t allowed to ask about or document immigration status, according to the city.
Last year, City Council failed on a slim vote to pass an amendment to the immigrant-friendly ordinance that would’ve allowed local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE officers for those charged with drug or human trafficking or a violent felony.
Keller in a statement said the new White House executive orders “have created confusion and fear.
“In Albuquerque, we value our immigrant community and know they make a positive impact on our city and the economy,” he said.
