Delivery is changing, but not the mission

Published Modified

At the Journal we strive to provide current, relevant news to all of New Mexico's communities.

That is true for our city, sports, arts and the business desks. So we're going to give the business section a boost.

We're going to publish Business Outlook every day.

Starting tomorrow, we are bringing our work into the A section of the paper. Readers will see the Business Outlook banner at the top of a section, similar to the Metro & NM banner.

Deputy Editor Megan Gleason, reporters Matt Narvaiz and Allison Carpenter and I aren't going anywhere. We'll keep doing the work we've been doing to bring you the most comprehensive and contextual news about the Albuquerque and New Mexico economy and business community. There will be Business Outlook branded pages every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and a more robust section on Sunday.

Why make the change? Because this will help us better carry out our mission to provide current, relevant news.

Every week, the four of us reporters work to write and edit our stories and photographs by a Thursday afternoon deadline for the Business Outlook tabloid. The section is printed Saturday mornings and it is on your doorstep Monday morning — four days after we finished writing and reporting the news.

Moving forward, our work will be published more frequently and more timely. We will be able to more quickly respond to breaking business news as it happens, and then we will use our Sunday section as an outlook on trends and bigger issues.

We're not going to be doing less. Our One-on-One profiles of business leaders and rising stars will continue. Our two longtime columnists: Jerry Pacheco, who has written the Business Across the Border column for more than 30 years, and Jim Hamill, who writes the One the Money column every week, can still contribute. The restaurant inspections will continue to be reported — now the news of red tags won't be as stale. Our Business Outlook podcast will come out every week.

We're going to be doing more. We are adding new daily features, including a report on how stocks important to New Mexico are performing, a look at commodities relevant to New Mexico, timely updates on oil and gas well activity and regular checks on municipal bonds and pensions. Furthermore, we're adding a daily business newsletter.

Business Outlook made its debut on Aug. 6, 1984.

For more than 40 years, Journal readers got an outlook on business and the economy every Monday to start their week.

They're still going to get the same outlook. Just quicker.
