A locally owned barbecue joint is crossing the Rio Grande and bringing its smoked meats and comfort food to Albuquerque’s West Side.

Duke City BBQ will establish its first West Side location at a shopping strip at 10621 Unser NW. Owner Esteban Quezada said he hopes to open the location by the end of October.

“I think it’ll be great for that side of town,” Quezada said.

Quezada, with the help of restaurant developer Yogesh Patel, opened the first Duke City BBQ at 5500 San Mateo NE in 2023. Wowing the Duke City with its moist brisket, turkey and mac and cheese, the business doubled with the opening of a second location at 12501 Candelaria NE in March.

Quezada said he never imagined his business would grow from one restaurant to three. As the business grew, so did the requests from people on the West Side to open a location there, Quezada said.

The barbecue restaurant will join a lineup of other food-oriented businesses at the development — built in 2024 — including Stripes Burrito Co., Crackin’ Crab, House of Chimney Cakes and Chicken Salad Chick.

“It’s a growing area,” Quezada said.

Quezada said he has received several calls since the business’ sign went up at the new location, asking when it’s going to open. Quezada said he’s looking forward to better serving another area of the Duke City.

“Hopefully we can just continue serving great food, quality service and making people happy,” Quezada said.
