The list is prestigious, and the magazine is well known.

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., was named one of TIME magazine's most 100 influential people in the world in artificial intelligence in 2024. He was the only member of Congress on the list, which also included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman of OpenAI and actress Scarlett Johansson.

“I'm honored to be listed as one of TIME’s 100 most influential leaders in AI,” Heinrich said in a statement. “As AI continues to rapidly evolve, it is absolutely vital that Congress steps in to ensure AI comes as a benefit to the American people, and not a threat.

"Done right, we can unlock AI innovation that will deliver major scientific and medical advancements, including at places like our national labs here in New Mexico, while laying out the guardrails necessary to mitigate the risks of AI. I am committed to that important work.”

Some of the work the Heinrich has done in the field of AI includes:

  • Cofounded the Senate Bipartisan AI Caucus with former Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio. The caucus aims to keep the U.S. at the forefront of responsible AI innovation.
  • Was on a panel with George R.R. Martin and University of New Mexico professor Melanie Moses about AI in arts and culture. He's also held events to highlight the potential of for Albuquerque small businesses to use AI.
