There’s a new child care option for families on Kirtland Air Force Base.

Kirtland officials on Wednesday welcomed Toni Trefzer as the first certified Family Child Care provider on base in the last six years. She can have six children of base members in her home. A perk is that the children are supervised in smaller settings and have more flexible schedules than traditional daycares, according to the Air Force.

New Mexico last year passed a law exempting state licensing requirements for child-care programs or facilities certified by the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Trefzer is the spouse of Staff Sergeant Mitchel Trefzer of the 58th Special Operation Wing at Kirtland. She previously was an FCC provider at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

“Ms. Toni has gone through an incredibly rigorous certification process to provide essential childcare to our military families,” Lt. Col. Amanda Ratliff, 377th Force Support Squadron commander, the unit in charge of the FCC program, said in a statement. “She is not only meeting an immediate need but inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.”
