The University of New Mexico’s Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering is named after a former engineering professor and university president.

Gerald May will be the first guest on a new podcast highlighting successful New Mexicans.

Albuquerque resident Doug Campbell is launching the podcast, Leaders of Enchantment, on Wednesday with the professor he said was instrumental in his early career path.

“I would not have experienced the career success that I did without early guidance from Dr. May, and that’s why the first episode absolutely had to be with him,” Campbell said in a statement.

He told the Journal he wants his new podcast to highlight more good news in New Mexico.

Campbell said most New Mexico-centric podcasts fall in three categories: news, sports and influencers. This show aims to go beyond that.

“The opportunities in New Mexico are limitless,” Campbell said in a statement. “I want people to hear from New Mexicans who are doing transformative things in our communities and discuss how they got there. My goal is to inspire others to follow their lead and move New Mexico forward.”

Campbell described Albuquerque as stagnant, comparing it to the booming ecosystem of Colorado, where he lived for two decades. He said it’s egregious considering the national labs and universities in New Mexico.

Campbell said he’s actively investing in New Mexico. With the connections of business, venture, startup and educational communities he’s involved in, he said, he wanted a conversational podcast featuring prominent people.

“ I want to hear how you got there,” he said. “What’s your origin story? What’s your career story? What did you do along the way, if you had to do it all over, what would you do?”

He said younger people in New Mexico can use good role models.

Future episodes will feature educational officials, sports coaches, community leaders and elected officials. The podcast series can be found online at LeadersOfEnchantment.com.
