The list of candidates designed to find a newly-appointed state regulator shrunk to seven people on Wednesday.

The Public Regulation Commission’s nominating committee for months has been in the process of narrowing down commissioner applications. Last month, the committee narrowed down a list of 32 applicants to 13 applicants.

Now, only seven remain: Blessing Chukwu, Colin Walcavich, Debra Hicks, Flavious Smith, Greg Nibert, James Ellison and Stephen Meyer. Their application materials and completed questionnaires can be found online at prc.nm.gov/nominating-committee/.

The seven candidates will move forward with interviews with the nominating committee. The interviews will take place on Oct. 23 and 24 in person in Santa Fe.

The nominating committee must send a list with at least two nominees to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham by December. She will appoint the state regulator, who is also subject to Senate confirmation.

The newly appointed state regulator will serve 2025-2031. Sitting commissioners have an annual salary of $190,000, and the governor will determine and announce the exact salary of whomever she appoints later on.
