A list compiled by High Rise Legal Funding — a pre-settlement legal funding company — ranked New Mexico as the second most dangerous state for using public transportation.

The company analyzed bus fatality data from the Bureau of Transport Statistics between 2010 and 2022 — as well as rail accident data for 2022 from the Federal Railroad Administration — and compared the total number of bus fatalities and rail accidents against the population in each state to find the number of public transportation accidents per 100,000 residents to come up with a safety score for each state, a news release said.

Based on the data, New Mexico's score was 12.90 out of 100 with 20 rail accidents in 2022 and .44 bus fatalities per 100,000 residents.

Montana ranked the most dangerous state for using public transportation in America, with a Public Transport Safety Score of 12.81 out of 100.

The city that ranked lowest on the list — making it the safest state for public transportation use — was New Hampshire, which had a safety score of 100 out of 100 with no bus fatalities recorded between 2010, and 2022 and no rail accidents in 2022.
