Bernalillo County Fire Rescue stations will be opening their doors to trick or treaters on Halloween night as they activate “Operation Boo.” Crews at 12 stations will be handing out candy and also providing safety tips to children and their families from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

“Operation Boo gives children the chance to see and meet firefighters without having an emergency bring them together,” Fire Rescue Chief Greg Perez said in a news release. “Getting treats at county fire stations is a safe and fun trick-or-treating experience for children and parents to enjoy.”

In addition, the Bernalillo County Prevention Bureau is asking that parents and caretakers follow these safety tips to ensure a safe and fun Halloween night: Check the labels on costumes to ensure they are made from fire-retardant materials; have children carry a flashlight while treat-or-treating; have adults supervise the lighting of candles for jack-o’-lanterns; and accompany young children when they are out treat-or-treating and check their candy before they eat it.
