Sometimes you don’t want to rough it.

If you have a fifth-wheel trailer and a truck, you can try out one of New Mexico’s full-service campgrounds on private land.

Steve Barrington of the Albuquerque Publishing Company circulation department recommends the Pendaries RV Resort in Rociada.

“The reason I glamp instead of camp is that I enjoy getting out into nature, but I still want the comforts of home,” Barrington said. “I’m at the age where roughing ... is no longer something that interests me.”

The campground, which reopens on Thursday, May 15, has 50 full hookup sites, an on-site camp store, laundry, Wi-Fi and more. Ponderosa pines and hiking trails are nearby.

The RV resort notes on its website that it miraculously survived the largest wildfire in New Mexico history after the 2022 Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire burned through the area.

Pendaries is beautiful, Barrington said with tall trees surrounding campers.

“This campsite was spared and is beautiful — lots of wildlife, quiet, serene, very enjoyable,” he said.

Pendaries has cabins for rent, too.

The park-like area has activities, including bocce ball, pickleball, disc golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard and other clubhouse activities. There is also a nearby turquoise mine and even a food truck: the Grill at Rociada.

Morphy Lake, Storrie Lake State Park, Salman Raspberry Ranch and Victory Alpaca Ranch are all less than 30 minutes away. Las Vegas, New Mexico, with its restaurants, Walmart and local stores, is less than 30 minutes away and is a great place to stay for a long trip, Barrington said.
