Johnny Strong leads an intense journey in 'Warhorse One'
Johnny Strong is a creative spirit.
Over the course of his career in the film and TV industry, he’s challenged himself by the roles that he’s taken on.
In his latest project, “Warhorse One,” Strong wore many hats.
He is at the helm as director. Not to mention he is the writer and composer of the film.
This is all in addition to him starring as Master Chief Richard Mirko.
“Warhorse One” follows a desperate civilian rescue attempt set in motion shortly after the 2021 withdrawal of the United States military from Afghanistan.
After a SEAL team helicopter is downed en route to the rendezvous point, the lone surviving operator must evade hostile insurgents and navigate treacherous terrain while guiding his one remaining charge — a traumatized young girl — to safety.
The film is currently in select theaters and available on all digital platforms.
Strong has appeared in the “Fast and Furious” franchise — so he’s used to gravitating towards roles that give him a rush.
“Warhorse One,” reminded him of when he saw “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as a child and knew he wanted to bring stories like that to life.
“Another big inspiration for me as a creative individual is when I saw ‘The Kid’ starring Charlie Chaplin,” he says. “I saw that he did his own stunts and scored it. That was always a goal for me.”
Strong took his time in creating “Warhorse One” because he knew of the challenges that would come from wearing so many hats.
He also found a commonality with his character.
“It’s really myself and a metaphor for the journey in my own life,” he says. “We share similar characteristics. As human beings, it’s a strange journey filled with the perfect beauty and utter tragedy. That’s the struggle that we all face in this temporary window that we get here. I wanted the film to reflect that. Especially how Richard is in this parental/protector role.”
