Classic tunes: New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus take the stage with best of Broadway
The New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus will perform Broadway’s best during “An Evening with Tony.”
The New Mexico Gay Men’s chorus is going to the Tonys.
Singing award-winning songs, that is, in performances in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The Albuquerque shows are slated for the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, March 30, and Sunday, March 31. The Santa Fe performance is at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on April 6.
“We wanted to do an all-Broadway show,” said Aaron Howe, NMGMC artistic director. “We picked three (award-winning) musicals per decade.”
The music includes songs from “Guys and Dolls,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Cabaret,” “A Chorus Line,” “Cats,” “Rent,” “The Lion King,” “Hairspray,” “Avenue Q,” “The Book of Mormon” and “Kinky Boots.”
The songs have been arranged for a male chorus, Howe said.
“I had a list of all the Broadway musical winners going back to the 1940s,” he continued. “We all just sort of voted.
“In general, a lot of the songs were designed for both men and women,” Howe added. “We had to adapt them to just men’s voices, which sometimes included changing a key. But you’re still going to have tons of soloists ... and a drag queen. Vanessa Patricks is our host. She’s just fabulous. She’s also a fabulous singer herself.”
At the end, audience members can vote for their favorite musical per decade.
“We’re doing an award show about musicals who have won an award and give them another award,” Howe said. “Us gays like our Broadway musicals, but so many other people do as well.”
