New Mexico author T. Kingfisher to talk about 'Hemlock & Silver' at Bookworks
AT BOOKWORKS
New Mexico author T. Kingfisher will talk about her novel “Hemlock & Silver” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Bookworks.
In this fantasy story, healer Anja regularly drinks poison — not to die, but to save. She seeks cures for those who everyone else has given up on. A summons from the King interrupts her quiet life. His daughter Snow is dying and he hopes Anja’s unorthodox healing methods can save her. Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work until she finds a secret world hidden inside a magic mirror.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, Nora Wendl will be in conversation with Maggie Grimason about Wendl’s new book “Almost Nothing: Reclaiming Edith Farnsworth.”
This book of creative nonfiction explodes the sex-and-real-estate myth surrounding the Edith Farnsworth House and its two central figures — architect Mies van der Rohe and Farnsworth, an eminent physician and a woman of letters.
She commissioned van der Rohe to design and construct a one-room weekend retreat in Plano, Illinois, about 60 miles from downtown Chicago. The house was designed and built between 1946 and 1951.
Wendl’s book argues that the house’s history falsely portrays Farnsworth as the architect’s angry ex-lover. The book restores Farnsworth’s place in architectural history and the masterpiece that bears her name.
The house is a site on the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Bookworks is located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.
