Blues, stars and the Year of the Horse: 7 events this week

This month ushers in the Year of the Horse, and more specifically, the Fire Horse. You can celebrate the equine of the year this weekend at the Chinese Culture Center. Or trot over to one of these other events.

Horsing around

The Chinese Culture Center is celebrating the Year of the Horse from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. The event will feature dragon and lion dances, kung fu demonstrations, tai chi and more. The event is free. The Chinese Culture Center is located at 427 Adams. St. SE.

They’ve got the blues

Devon Allman Blues Summit — featuring Devon Allman Project, Jimmy Hall, Larry McCray and Laka Soul — will make a stop at the KiMo Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23. Tickets are $33-$55 at ampconcerts.org. The KiMo is located at 423 Central Ave. NW.

In the Atmosphere

Minneapolis hip-hop duo Atmosphere will bring their Winter Carnival Tour to Revel at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Tickets are $47.15, plus fees, at revelabq.com. Revel is located at 4720 Alexander Blvd. NE.

A dynamic duo

The Placitas Artist Series continues at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, with a chamber music performance with David Felberg on violin and Luke Gullickson on piano. The program includes works by Somei Satoh, Johannes Brahms, Igor Stravinsky and more. Tickets are $30 at placitasarts.org. Las Placitas Presbyterian Church is located at 7 Paseo de San Antonio in Placitas.

Suddenly, Seymour

The Public Academy for Performing Arts is bringing “Little Shop of Horrors” to the South Broadway Cultural Center. It will be suppertime at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27. Tickets are $5-$25 at artsandculture.cabq.gov. South Broadway Cultural Center is located at 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE.

A taste of Japan

Learn how to make mochi as the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden hosts a mochitsuki demonstration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. BioPark staff and the Sister City Foundation for Sasebo, Japan, will show eventgoers the art of transforming rice into the sticky, flavorful dough. Tickets are $1-$19.50 at artsandculture.cabq.gov, with discounts for qualified individuals. The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden

The night skies

The Albuquerque Astronomical Society and the Bachechi Open Space are co-hosting a Star Party from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. The event will feature a talk on the “Night Skies of the Season,” a laser-led tour of constellations and more. The event is free. Parking can be found at the lot off Alameda Boulevard, on the south side of the road, between Rio Grande Boulevard and the river. The Bachechi Open Space is located at 9521 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.
