Camping mistakes: Don’t run over the dog bowl

Dog water bowl was crushed by a tire.

It seemed like a great place to keep the dog bowl at camp: under the front wheel so that campers don’t trip over it and dogs know where to go for a soothing drink of water.

For years, when we arrived at camp, we would slip the metal bowl under the front passenger wheel and fill it to the brim. The last few trips, near disaster struck.

Someone left the bowl in place when backing up to level the rig, and it was mushed. Luckily, no dogs or tires were injured in the mishap. The first time this happened, a few swings of the handy hammer helped restore the bowl to a usable shape.

On our most recent trip to watch for falling stars near the Dome Wilderness in the Jemez Mountains, the van started rolling off the leveling blocks when the van door slid open.

(BTW: Be sure to securely set your parking brake after driving up any incline.)

Screaming ensued.

The bowl was crushed again. Egos were hurt.

No feet or paws were injured. The parking brake was reset and the drinking bowl will not be placed behind the wheel again.

Dog bowl doesn't survive two times under the wheel.
