ESSENTIAL OVERLAND GEAR: Snow socks

Snow socks come in many sizes and can replace chains to navigate snowy roads.

Snow socks are snuggly and warm for your rig, unlike the rusty, old chains you keep in your trunk or gear bag.

AutoSock claims to be the inventor of the snow sock fabric traction devices that easily fit over vehicle tires. These are an easier-to-install alternative to tire chains, providing grip on snow and ice. They cost more than chains, around $150 a pair for most vehicles, and can be purchased at local stores, including Advanced Auto Parts or online.

AutoSock takes three minutes to install — even on vehicles with low clearance, according to the company website. In my experience, it took a bit longer installing, but didn’t leave me with greasy, icy, scratched-up fingers like chains.

AutoSock brand snow socks are a legal substitute on any road in the United States where chains are required, such as mountain passes.

AutoSock come in a carrying bag to keep your trunk clean after using the chain-alternative in slushy conditions.

“In the U.S., AutoSock is approved in every state with chain laws with weights even beyond 10,000 pounds (they are used on semis regularly) all the way up through five-plus axle vehicles,” according to the AutoSock website.

Be sure to check legality if you purchase another brand.
