Polar bears, Peppa Pig and STEAM Day: 7 events this week

Polar bears are the largest ursine species on Earth. If you want to learn more about these amazing animals of the arctic, head to the ABQ BioPark Zoo this weekend. Or check out one of these other cool events.

Getting abstract

The Albuquerque Abstract Artists Alliance is going “Beyond the Physical World” at the South Broadway Cultural Center. The show, which runs through March 14, challenges the artists to reach into emotions and imagination. The SBCC Public Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and is located at 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE.

Guitar hero

String virtuoso Tony Furtado will be playing two shows in New Mexico this weekend. First, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Sage Valley Pottery, 4908 Corrales Road in Corrales. Then, he will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the San Miguel Mission, 401 Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe. Tickets for the Corrales show are $34.11, and tickets for the Santa Fe show are $34.64-$50.58 at holdmyticket.com.

Gathering STEAM

Discover STEAM Day is making its return to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. The day will include a visit from Albuquerque Isotopes mascot Orbit, history will come to life with an Albert Einstein impersonator, demonstrations and more. Attendees will receive a custom Discover STEAM Day button. The event is included in the price of admission, $12-$24, at nuclearmuseum.org.

Cool fun

The ABQ BioPark Zoo is celebrating International Polar Bear Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. The zoo will have Discovery Stations with biofacts and hands-on activities and visitors can learn about zoo resident Kiska and other polar bears at the Inukshuk Bay keeper chat at 11 a.m. Admission to the zoo is $1-$19.50 at artsandculture.cabq.gov and free for qualified individuals. The zoo is located at 903 10th St. SW.

A worthy cause

“Movers and Shakers: Works by Artists Who Teach, Lead, and Inspire,” an exhibition of 300 works by 14 New Mexico artists, is open at Gallery with a Cause through May 15. Forty percent of each art sale goes to the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation. This little piggy ...

Peppa Pig and her family are coming to Popejoy Hall at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3. “Peppa Pig: My First Concert” will highlight the different sounds instruments make together and will feature music from the popular children’s show. Tickets are $29.50-$67.50 at popejoypresents.com. Popejoy Hall is located on the University of New Mexico campus.

A trip to Mexico

Take a journey through Mexico’s historic and geographic regions with “Trekking Mexico,” coming to The Lensic Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1. Mexico Beyond Mariachi will take audience members on a musical trip featuring folkloric music and dance. Tickets are $22-$28 at lensic.org. The Lensic Performing Arts Center is located at 211 W. San Francisco St. in Santa Fe.
