Swing, theater and books: 7 events this week
I made it a goal this year to read more books. So far, I’ve logged seven books read under my belt. But who’s counting? If you want to read more books, you need more books to read. If your goal is also to read more, the Friends of the Public Library is hosting a used book sale this weekend. Or you can check out one of these other events.

Talking history
Historian Raymond Sisneros will speak on the “Early History of the Navajo Tribe” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, as part of the Corrales Historical Society’s Speaker Series. Sisneros will trace the Navajo people from their Athabaskan roots to their migration to the American Southwest, discussing major historical events that impacted the Diné. All eyes on them
The Placitas Community Library is hosting “The Eyes Have It,” an art exhibit focusing on the “most expressive of our five senses.” The show runs through March 5, with a public reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. The library is located at 453 New Mexico Highway 165 in Placitas, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Hitting the rails
Science is on tap at The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, with “New Mexico Railroads at the Dawn of the Nuclear Age.” Learn how the state’s railroads were a keystone in the Manhattan Project, going beyond transit lines. Know thy enemy
Vortex Theatre is bringing Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, with repeats through March 8. The play explores the conflict between societal expectations and personal integrity. Tickets are $21-$26 at vortexabq.org. Vortex Theatre is located at 2900 Carlisle Blvd. NE.
They’ve got books covered
The Friends of the Public Library are hosting a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Main Branch Library, 501 Copper Ave. NW. The sale will also feature puzzles, music, movies and more. Admission to the sale is $2 from 10 a.m. to noon and free after noon. Proceeds benefit the library. Feel the beat
The Third Thursday at the Albuquerque Museum is honoring Black History Month from 5-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, with a performance by Wassa Wassa, featuring West African drumming and acrobatic dance. Eventgoers can also browse the marketplace offerings from Ujima Collective or stroll through the museum’s exhibits. The event is free. The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain Road NW.
Swing, swing, swing
The Glenn Miller Orchestra is making a stop at Popejoy Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. The band will perform some of its biggest hits including “A String of Pearls,” “In the Mood” and “Moonlight Serenade.” Tickest are $29.50-$73.50 at popjoypresents.com. Popejoy Hall is located on the University of New Mexico campus.
