LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces police say a Monday night shooting has left a local teen dead.

Officers responded at approximately 9 p.m. to reports of gunfire near Solano Drive and Spruce Avenue, a busy intersection close to downtown.

According to a Tuesday news release, police found 14-year-old Alejandro Roman, who had been shot at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to save his life. Little was reported about the circumstances, but police said investigators suspect the shooting stemmed from a confrontation over a “road rage” incident. Police did not state whether Roman had been a passenger in a vehicle or a pedestrian.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday evening, as police sought tips via the local Crime Stoppers organization, the Las Cruces Crime Stoppers app P3 TIPS or by calling LCPD at 575-526-0795.

It was the latest in a string of recent incidents in which teenage residents fell to gunfire in public places, in some cases shot or pursued by other teens.

Three teenage boys were killed at a car meetup in a city park in March, and three of the four accused shooters, now facing murder charges, were teens.

A week prior to that, 19-year-old Gabriel Padilla was shot and wounded by a police officer while fleeing on foot, holding a handgun when he fell to the pavement. He has since been indicted on a felony charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon.

On May 8, an argument among pedestrians and passengers in a vehicle led to a foot chase in which 18-year-old Josiah Perrault pursued two teenagers with a firearm, only to be shot by a police officer who had been sitting in his vehicle preparing for the end of his shift.
