A race to remember: State Police take first place in 67-mile relay

They’re all first responders, but on Saturday, someone had to be last.

The Metro 2 First Responder Relay saw teams made up of law enforcement officers and firefighters race from Santa Fe to Downtown Albuquerque.

The 67-mile race began at 7 a.m., with more than 200 runners giving it their all, some having to run through hail and wind as various first responder agencies lined the route and some light trash talking peppered the dispatch lines.

A team of New Mexico State Police officers took first place at 3:38 p.m., followed by Bernalillo County Fire Rescue in second and the Albuquerque Police Department in third place.

Previously known as the Corona Cup Relay, the annual race was rebranded in remembrance of those killed aboard Metro 2, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office helicopter that crashed in 2022.
