A Thanksgiving Day tradition in Rio Rancho goes on hold. Find out why
Citing a normal disruption with the ministry that runs St. Felix Pantry, an annual holiday tradition in Rio Rancho will take a hiatus.
St. Felix Pantry and the Garza family, whose McDonald's restaurant at 1390 N.M. 528 has played host to a Thanksgiving Day dinner for more than 30 years, announced Thursday that the event will not happen this year.
“The announcement comes as St. Felix Pantry rotates members of the Felician Sisters — a normal process which takes place every few years,” the news release reads.
St. Felix Pantry is a ministry of the Felician Sisters of North America.
The Garzas will make a $5,000 donation to the pantry instead.
“We understand how disappointing this news may be for some, but we are intent on serving the community in other ways, which includes supporting St. Felix Pantry during this time of need around the holiday season,” local McDonald’s owner and operator Clemy Garza said in the release. “We look forward to working together with St. Felix Pantry to bring back the beloved Thanksgiving Dinner next year, bigger and better than ever.”
Executive Director of St. Felix Pantry, Sister Mary Angel Parkins, said they appreciated the understanding and support of the community.
“As the Pantry goes through the rotation of Felician Sisters, the mission will always remain the same of feeding those in need in the Rio Rancho and Sandoval County communities,” she said.
