Albuquerque police sergeant injured, suspect killed in shootout
An Albuquerque police sergeant was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with a man at an apartment complex near Montgomery and Carlisle early Friday.
The suspect, 23-year-old Anthony Williams, was killed by police and a neighbor at the complex was also struck by gunfire in the arm, according to Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Gilbert Gallegos.
Sgt. Brandon Watts was shot in the leg by Williams and is expected to recover, he said.
Court records show Williams had been released from probation in October, a sentence he served on a 2021 case in which he allegedly beat a jail guard.
Gallegos said Williams also previously served 5 months in juvenile jail after taking a plea deal in the 2019 shooting deaths of three men.
On Wednesday residents of the Tesota Morningside apartment complex on Montgomery NE, east of Carlisle, reported Williams was walking around “suffering from a mental health crisis” but he declined to go to a hospital.
Gallegos said officers responded to a “similar call” at the complex early Friday morning and found Williams armed with a handgun.
“As officers attempted to speak to Williams, he quickly produced a handgun and aimed it at officers,” he said. “Williams shot Sgt. Watts in the leg as several officers returned gunfire and fatally struck Williams.”
“This evening we are very fortunate we didn’t lose an officer,” APD Chief Harold Medina said in an early morning briefing outside the complex.
