The Albuquerque Police Department is telling residents to be careful of a scam involving the impersonation of Chief Harold Medina.

APD spokeswoman Rebecca Atkins said on Tuesday afternoon police has received reports of a caller telling people they are Medina. The person says they are contacting them because they spoke with an underage girl on a social media app and her parents wanted to press charges. The number on the call appears to come from an actual police line.

Atkins said the call ends before another call comes stating the person needed to send money to pay for the minor's medical bills. That person also provides a badge number.

She said there has been one report of the scam that she was "aware of."

The Albuquerque Police Department "would never contact individuals and request or demand any form of payment over the phone," she said.

Atkins said people are encourage to report the scam to 242-COPS or go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
