Sen. Ben Ray Luján gets new Senate committee assignment
Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., speaks at the Arcosa Wind Towers, Aug. 9, in Belen. Luján, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., joined with the House Congressional Hispanic Caucus at a press conference in front of the Capitol where they battered both Senate Republicans for demanding the border policy changes in exchange for passing Ukraine aid as well as Biden for making concessions that they warned would harm asylum seekers and ultimately undermine the United States’ standing as a country that welcomes immigrants.
U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján has a new committee appointment in the Senate, which flipped from a Democratic to a Republican majority.
The New Mexico Democrat has joined the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees taxation and revenue measures, as well as trade agreements and — a hot-topic with the incoming President Donald Trump administration — tariffs. Luján will also continue serving on the Senate’s Agriculture, Commerce and Budget committees, as well as the Committee on Indian Affairs.
“As a member of the Finance Committee, I will continue my efforts to protect New Mexicans’ access to health care and to lower prescription drug costs. I will fight to protect Social Security so that our seniors can retire in dignity, and push for a fair tax code that provides middle-class New Mexicans with tax relief," Luján said in a statement.
The 119th Senate gaveled in Friday.
