UNM long-distance runners sweep 5,000-meter races at Mountain West championships
UNM’s Habtom Samuel clocked a 13:45.57 to win the men’s 5,000-meter race at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championship on Feb. 22, 2024, at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Samuel is the overwhelming favorite to win league titles in the men’s 3,000 and 5,000 this weekend.
University of New Mexico athletes swept the 5,000-meter races Thursday on the opening day of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Mercy Kirarei won the women’s 5,000 meters by more than 35 seconds, and Habtom Samuel beat the men’s field by more than 26 seconds to secure the sweep. Samuel broke the MWC Indoor Championship record in the process.
Samuel's time of 13:45.57 shattered the previous conference standard by more than 25 seconds. UNM's Evans Kiplagat finished second.
Through Thursday's competition, UNM led the men's competition and stood third on the women's side. The three-day meet continues Friday.
