The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is responding to a crash following a traffic stop on Interstate 40 by Carnuel on Monday.

“At this time, we can confirm a deputy is down and emergency response is underway,” BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said in an email.

The crash occurred on I-40 eastbound at milepost 170, she said.

Gonzales did not state how the deputy was injured or what caused the traffic stop. BSCO did not immediately share the name of the deputy.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation reports I-40 eastbound is closed at Tramway to mile post 173 and I-40 westbound is closed at mile post 175 near State Road 14.

"Drivers should avoid the area, if possible," Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said.

This is a developing story.
