A deputy with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office was killed Monday while on duty, the department said.

"The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is heartbroken to confirm that one of our sergeants was killed in the line of duty this evening,” BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said in an email.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. during a traffic stop on I-40 eastbound at milepost 170, near Carnuel.

BCSO did not release further details, nor did they name the sergeant in news releases sent Monday night.

Both lanes of I-40 were closed for hours on Monday while authorities investigated.

The sergeant is the first officer killed in the line of duty in New Mexico this year. Two officers, Antonio Aleman of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office and Timothy Ontiveros of the Bloomfield Police Department, were killed in the line of duty last year.

A procession for the BCSO sergeant was planned late Monday night along I-40 and through the city to the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, members of his command staff, and BCSO employees were expected to participate and planned to hold a news conference following the procession.

This is a developing story.
