Bernalillo County is asking for the public’s help as it narrows down its search for artists who will create panels for a COVID-19 memorial.

Albuquerque residents Eleanor Bravo and Janet Nuñez del Prado spearheaded the project to build a memorial honoring their loved ones and others who died from coronavirus disease. The memorial will be built on an acre of state trust land near the Mesa del Sol Regional Sports Complex.

The project, which had a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 1, will be completed some time in 2026, Bernalillo County spokesperson J. Austin Munn said in a news release on Monday.

More than 70 artists from across the Southwest submitted concepts to build art panels at the memorial, and 13 semi-finalists were selected for public review. Six finalists will be chosen in early 2026, he said.

The proposals will be on display inside the Bernalillo County building lobby at 415 Silver SW during regular business hours. Visitors can scan a posted QR code to submit comments after viewing the work, Munn said.

The comments will help the county determine which artists will advance to create the six panels for the memorial’s “pilgrimage path,” he said.

“Each panel will feature a distinct perforated metal design, casting shifting light and shadow along the walkway,” Munn said.

People have until Dec. 19 to submit comments.
