A bronze sculpture that is part of a larger historical art installation near the Albuquerque Museum has been stolen, museum staff said.

The Albuquerque Museum said staff recently discovered the sculpture, which depicts a young girl, was stolen, and reported the theft to the Albuquerque Police Department.

"Public art belongs to the entire community, and we take incidents like this seriously," the museum said in a news release.

The display at 19th and Mountain NW in Old Town is not part of the Albuquerque Museum's art collection but rather one of several sculptures in the city of Albuquerque's Public Art Program.

La Jornada was commissioned as part of the Cuarto Centenario Project and commemorates 400 years since the Spanish arrived in New Mexico. The installation features numerous bronze sculptures meant to depict Spanish families arriving in the state.

Anyone with information about the missing art piece is asked to contact 311 or APD.

"Community awareness and support are essential in helping protect and preserve Albuquerque's public art for everyone," the museum said.
