Brrr: State prepares for another round of cold weather
Lobos fans head out into the cold after the Lobos game against Fresno State at The Pit on Monday. New Mexicans will need to stay warm as temperatures are expected to reach zero or below with wind chill early Tuesday morning, National Weather Service of Albuquerque meteorologist Carter Greulich said.
Parts of New Mexico are bracing for more double-digit below zero temperatures.
In northern New Mexico, Monday morning’s high was 9 below zero with wind chill in Angel Fire. Angel Fire and Raton could see temperatures reach 25-30 below zero late Monday into early Tuesday, while it could get to 20 below zero with wind chill in Clayton and Red River, National Weather Service of Albuquerque meteorologist Carter Greulich said.
In the Albuquerque metro area, a cold weather advisory will be in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures could dip to zero or single digits below zero with wind chill, he said.
To prepare for the cold weather, Greulich recommends protecting plants and pets and ensuring pipes don’t burst.
The best way to prevent pipes from freezing is to insulate exposed pipes with pipe insulation, according to AAA. The organization also suggested opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation and knowing where water shutoff valves are located, in case of an emergency.
“We encourage homeowners to make sure they take all the necessary steps to protect their homes,” AAA New Mexico and Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said.
If anyone has to go outside, they should be covered as much as possible, Greulich said.
In Albuquerque, people can call Albuquerque Community Safety at 505-418-6178 to request transportation to a public or private shelter or 505-768-4357 for information on day shelters and other resources.
