Catching a lift: Sandia Peak Ski Area opens

Published Modified

Christmas came early — at least for the snow bunnies.

Sandia Peak Ski Area opened for the season on Saturday morning with one chair lift running up the beginner slope. Opening day saw hundreds of skiers and snowboarders dot the shimmering snow under a blue sky as temps crawled into the 50s.

Officials plan to open more lifts with access to higher terrain after enough snow falls on the mountain. Currently, the ski area is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with advance lift tickets going for as low as $19 when you buy online, while kids 12 and under ski for free.
